Âşık Mahzuni Şerif was a poet, bağlama player, and one of the most prolific modern representatives of the Anatolian aşık tradition. His songs joined Alevi-Bektaşi cultural memory to sharp observations about poverty, injustice, politics, and everyday life. Hundreds of recordings and widely covered compositions made his repertory part of Turkey's shared folk songbook.
